April Agent Spotlight: Darcy Handy

As the oldest child of a prominent real estate developer in Chittenden and Franklin Counties, Darcy learned from age 10 onward about construction, property management, and the real estate industry by visiting construction sites, going to closings and eventually taking over the business responsibilities for three hotels and over 400 apartments. It was a natural progression after 25 years experience in the hospitality and property management industries to now sell real estate.

As a native Vermonter, Darcy knows the various communities in and around Chittenden, Franklin, Lamoille, Grand Isle and Rutland counties. She's committed to meeting her clients needs and strives to ensure that her clients are satisfied throughout the buying and selling process.

In her free time, Darcy enjoys spending time with her three children, traveling and boating.

This month, we've asked Darcy a few questions about her experience as a Realtor! Let's learn a little more about her.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a realtor?

A: I enjoy how everyday is different.  Whether I am working with new or existing clients, viewing different properties, working on multiple negotiations or educating myself on the current trends and market changes being a realtor allows for a never ending variety of daily events.  


Q: What makes you different than other agents?

A: I attribute my success not only to my passion for renovating older homes, enjoying all types of architecture and 20 years participating hands on with my family's real estate development projects but also to my intuition regarding the psychology behind buying and selling a home.  With a vast amount of experience in residential and commercial real estate, I will always consult with my clients, handle all of the details, do what I say I am going to do, and most importantly negotiate as if I was negotiating with my own money.  My success is ultimately tied to my clients happiness and satisfaction and that is why they continue to work with me and refer me to their friends, family and neighbors. 


Q: What’s your top goal when working with a client?

A: I love the opportunity to build lifelong relationships with my clients while knowing I served a huge purpose in their lives by finding buyers their new home or helping sellers move onto the next chapter of their lives.

Agent Spotlight: Emily Biron

Emily is a native Vermonter, and after working in Massachusetts for a number of years she is happy to be able to call Vermont home once again. After buying her first house at age 22 she quickly realized how empowering home ownership is and, with the right support, how achievable it is. As a real estate agent she is flexible, determined, and eager to help others feel the same way about their home buying/selling experience.  

With a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a masters in project management Emily’s career before becoming a real estate professional has equipped her with extensive professional and technical experience providing her a utility that is difficult to match.

This month, we've asked Emily a few questions about her experience as a Realtor! Let's learn a little more about her.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a realtor?

A: The best part about being an agent is meeting buyers or sellers and being able to match their needs, whether they are just starting to look for a home or test the waters with selling, or if they need to buy or sell quickly. Connecting and being able to help my clients with their unique situation is the best part of my job. 


Q: What makes you different than other agents?

A: I'm passionate about Vermont, and its so rewarding to help individuals and families find their home here, whether they live here full time or want to find a special place to vacation. Being a life-long Vermonter, its second nature to help others however I can by calling on the network and resources that I've developed and maintained. Whether its knowing about an off-market property, properly marketing a home, or just simply having a plumber and an electrician that will answer my call, its the home-grown connections that often make a huge difference. 


Q: What’s your top goal when working with a client?

A: I want my clients to feel comfortable. Comfortable with me and comfortable with the process of buying or selling. There is alot that goes into buying or selling a home and it can be confusing and frustrating especially if you don't have somebody you can trust through the process. Making sure my clients understand the process, being there to answer questions, and reducing the stress and anxiety of buying/selling is my #1 goal.

What is your favorite part about working at Signature Properties? 


The variety of the work I do on a day to day two days are the same, and I truly enjoy a continually changing work environment. 


What is your favorite part of being involved in real estate? 


Meeting different people from all walks of life and getting to see/tour all of the great properties our region has to offer. It's a very interesting experience. 


Give one piece of advice to someone thinking of buying a home today.


Take your time and ask questions. There are tons of resources available to consumers today to help with the home searching and buying process. Although the process can seem daunting, there are plenty of people available to help you navigate the everchanging market. 

If your clients, or friends, were asked to describe you, what would they say?


I think they would describe me as: Friendly, Hardworking, Upfront and least I hope that's what they'd say! 

What do you like to do when you're not at the office?


I love to be outside. Snowboarding, and pretty much any outdoor activity I can get my hands on will keepy me happy. My family recently bought a home of our own, so I spend a lot of time doing upgrades and all of the maintenance projects that come with homeownership. Of course, I also like to spend as much time as possible with my family. 


If you could learn to do anything, what would it be and why?


Everything...seriously though; I truly believe anyone can learn anything they put their mind to if given enough time. If I had unlimited time and money to learn, I would like to learn a little bit more about everything. If I had to pick a starting point, it would be renewable energy because I feel that technology is so important to our future. 


Who is your biggest inspiration?


My wife and my family are by far my biggest motivators. They help push me to learn and to better myself every single day.


That sounds like a great support system. Tell me more about your family.


I have an extremely energetic and fun 6 year old stepson, a beautiful and supportive wife, and a daughter on the way...I'm excited to say the least!


Tell me about your proudest achievement. 


I know this sounds rather cliche, but purchasing my first home for my family and myself has probably been my proudest achievement to date. I had a goal, I stayed dedicated to it, and I achieved it...what's more personally satisfying than that?

Agent Spotlight...Gina Masters!


Gina is not only a great real estate agent, but a great community leader as well! She can be found spreading hope, help, awareness and plenty of smiles at a number of organizations in town. We are proud of all she does for our company and our community!



Let's get started by learning a little about your family...


I met my husband in the church choir in September of 2005, spent a few weeks being friends, began dating at Thanksgiving and got engaged on NYE 2005 and been married since 2006. Six year old miniature poodle, Franklin, is our baby.


What do you like to do outside of real estate?

I love going to the movies with my husband, eating out, boot camp classes, traveling -- and most recently, tennis lessons!


Tell us about your committment to a local community.

Over the last 10 years I have served the community of Essex Alliance Church in many ways. In the past, I have been a small group leader for Financial Peace University, helping people both inside and outside of the church gain financial freedom. If you ever visit us on a Sunday morning, you might see me up front singing on the worship team! Currently, my husband and I run a ministry every Thursday called "Celebrate Recovery" at Essex Alliance Church. It's a Christ centered Twelve Step recovery program for ALL hurts, habits and hang-ups. I also run a six week study called "The Daniel Plan" that teaches whole health - faith, food, fitness, focus and friends.

What have you been reading lately?

Favorites on my shelf are..."The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren, "A Resilient Life - You Can Move Ahead No Matter What" by Gordon MacDonald and for fiction fun, "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein.


If you could learn to do anything, what would it be and why?

Since I know I could learn anything I put my mind and time to, I would go back to some things I didn't fully appreciate before like learning to play the piano and becoming fluent in Spanish. Oh - and I'd be on American Ninja Warrior because it's the closest thing to being a super hero!


What is your biggest inspiration?

To live the purpose that God put me on this earth for. I know that I have just begun to scratch the surface and to know that is exciting for me!


What made you choose a career in real estate?

Actually, I had just lost my job in CA and moved back to VT, really unclear about what to do next. I had worked in sales before and thought the best time to try a commission only job was probably while I was still living at home. I had no expectations at all and was completely oblivious to the fact that the market at the time was on fire! Who knew?!


What is your favorite part of being a realtor?

I love consulting. I love helping people navigate through decisions and asking the questions they may not have asked themselves.

List your acheivements in the past 10 years of real estate. 

First recipient of the Northwestern Vermont Board of Realtors Rookie of the Year (2004) and the Vermont Association of Realtors Rising Star Award (2004). Four time winner of the Quality Service Award.


If your clients or friends were asked to describe you, what would they say?

Reliable, prepared, honest, energetic, loyal.


Give one piece of advice to someone thinknig of buying a home today.

To first time buyers, I would say get over the idea that your first home has to be your perfect dream home - it's not. It took your parents 30 years to get where they are, so stop expecting to live the same lifestyle it took them 30 years to build.


How do you stay at the top of your game?

I start the day with exercise, breakfast and prayer.


Tell us about your proudest achievement.

In 2012, my husband and I paid off $80,000 in debt and have been debt free ever since!


If I'd known then what I know now, I would have...

never listened, so it doesn't matter anyway!

    Do you have a favorite quote? Something that guides you?

    When you're not helping your clients buy and sell homes, what do you like to do? 

    Outside of real estate I enjoy spending time with family, coaching baseball, playing sports, hunting and fishing.


    If you could learn to do anything what would it be and why?

    I would love to learn to fly a plane, specifically a jet. 


    Who do you look to in your life for motivation?

    My family is my biggest motivator. Their support is what drives me to do my best every day. I have a loving wife of 8 years and two boys ages 4 and 6. My mother is one of 13 children so I have a very large extended family and have lost count of all the cousins I have! Having their support makes all the difference in my day to day career and life in general. 

    What lead you to real estate?

    I chose a career in real estate for several reasons. One, I was looking for a career that was going to challenge me day in and day out. Two, I really like that in this business there are a lot of moving parts. You get to meet and work with a lot of great people on a daily basis.


    It sounds like being a realtor is the perfect job for you! What is your favorite part about it?

    My favorite part of being a realtor is helping people navigate through the many facets involved with buying or selling a home.

    Home ownership can seem daunting to many people. What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying a home today?

    My best advice would be to seek out a professional who will be your advocate and put your best interests above and beyond anything else. It's important to have an expert on your side to help with tough decisions. 

    What do you do every day to keep you at the top of your game?

    I stay active - both physically and mentally. Exercising and keeping my mind fueled with new information keeps me sharp.

    Agent Spotlight...Stacey Barton!


    Stacey Barton is one of our most seasoned agents here at Signature Properties of Vermont. Recently, we interviewed Stacey as part of our ongoing 'Agent Spotlight' series; she's a valuable asset and we are proud to have her!


    Let's get to know you Stacey, first off, how many years have you been selling real estate?



    How long have you been at Signature Properties?

    5 years going on 6!


    You've had a successful career! What brought you to Signature Properties?

    Having worked with our broker/owner, Hank Gintof, for many years at a large franchise office, I was well aware of his leadership style, work ethic and integrity. I very much wanted a smaller, tight-knit company with tried and true leadership, a good support staff and like-minded coworkers. Coming to Signature Properties has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. 


    Let's learn a little more about you. Can you share your favorite quote?

    "This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I loved you." John 15:12


    We know you're passionate about real estate, but what are some of your other favorite pasttimes?

    I'm really an introvert (believe it or not!), so lots of reading, lots of laughter, lots of watching our sons play sports and spending time with my whole family -- which now includes two wonderful grandchildren!!


    What is your favorite book, or something you've been reading lately?

    The Bible 


    If you could learn to do anything what would it be and why?

    I would enjoy many aspects (not all!) of being a doctor, psychiatrist, lawyer or private detective! I love anything that causes me to brainstorm, help people and problem solve!


    What made you choose a career in real estate?

    In 1982, I was a senior in high school with no real plans. My father was an anti-college builder/contractor. He encouraged me to get my real estate license, so I could market his properties. While I had no idea what that entailed at the time, I blindly jumped in and became the youngest real estate agent in VT -- I had just graduated high school and was 18 years old.


    What is your favorite part of being a realtor?

    Buying and selling homes is not for the faint of heart! I love helping people navigate that seeming gauntlet and always hope I am somehow making a difference in that little part of their lives.


    Give one piece of advice to someone thinking of buying a home today.

    The BEST advice I could ever give someone is this: Seek out someone you trust to give you recommendations of professionals they have worked with to successfully solve their real estate problems. Once you choose to team up with him/her, commit to trusting them, so that you have the best working relationship possible, which in turn makes for the best outcomes.


    How do you stay at the top of your game?

    Haha - by doing myself what I just shared! In a number of different areas of my life, I have certain people that I go to who have proven themselves to be very available, reliable and trustworthy. Whether or not I totally understand the direction they send me, I know from experience that I can trust it as is the best course to take, and then I follow it without hesitation.


    Tell me about your proudest achievement.

    Finding such a wonderful, loving husband 28 years ago.


    Finish this sentence: If I'd known then what I know now...

    The "what ifs" and "if onlys" aren't real, so I don't give them one precious moment of my time.
